Producing the End ...
I am delighted to announced that the Kickstarter campaign for the first issue of the Producing the End of the World anthology is LIVE!
I announced the other day the campaign would go live on June 1st, but I always forget to account for the fact that this project originates out of Australia, and it’s been June 1st all day in Australia so the campaign has been live since this morning!
The open call for submissions occurred in the first year of the pandemic. I think I happened to find it through the Find Anthologies Twitter account that’s curated by writer/editor Stephanie Cooke. I was new to writing for comics - still am somewhat - and I didn’t have all that many short stories fully illustrated yet to submit to anthologies that wanted something completed, so I was hoping to find submission calls that would allow me to submit a story solely as a writer, and if chosen, maybe get paired up with an artist for the publication. And thankfully, gratefully, that’s what happened.
The submission call was for short stories, 12 pages at maximum, most crucially in which the world has to end. Or it’s already ended. Or it’s on the verge of destruction. The end of the world had to be in there somewhere. And the other crucial stipulation was: no zombies! There was a consensus on zombie burnout. Robert Kirkman covered it so find something else.
We were still in the first year of the pandemic so I didn’t want to write about a virus. (Although I guess I slightly did, though I wasn’t thinking of this particular stupid pandemic we’re in. Something far worse.)
I was developing a couple of ideas and eventually I found a way forward on the story that I ultimately submitted which saw the destruction of the Earth brought on by …
… okay, so, yes, it would seem that these three alien weirdos have arrived to destroy the Earth, and that’s exactly what they intend to do, except …
This is how the editor of the anthology, Anthony Pollock, wrote the tagline for the story, which you’ll see on the Kickstarter page …
The Very End – Humanity is already dead when its alien annihilators arrive to destroy it. So, what do they do now?
I’ll tell you their confused and a little distraught.
As for what they do, that’s where you’ll have to back the project to get your copy and see for yourself. And there are six other short stories in this first issue you’ll get to read, and you can choose from any one of five covers.
I’ll share more from my story and from those of my fellow creators as we move through the campaign. We’re already over a third of the way to our goal and it’s only the first day! I have to say a huge THANK YOU! to everyone who’s backed the project thus far. We’re well on our way and we’re so grateful that you’re going to help us make this book.
This will be my first published comic story and I can’t wait to share it with everyone!
More art from my story and others in future newsletters, but for tonight, I’ll leave you with this panel of Zhormir looking less than thrilled he landed in the bay upon entry.
Thanks, everybody!
Go back the campaign!
All the best,
Scott
