What Day Is It?
I always feel this way when I have a day off at the beginning of the week. All the common markers of routine need to work a little harder to place me within the context of a week thereafter. I can’t simply plant my feet in the midst of a day and know where I am. No, I have to work to catch up to today as I move through the slipstream of time. And many of the week’s often reliable markers of routine were displaced as well: workouts had to be shifted; as of this morning, I still hadn’t visited the comics shop and that’s almost always a Wednesday event; and yesterday we had to manage a sudden car repair that threw the day out of its rhythm. Now we’ve arrived at the end of the week and the safe refuge of the weekend is nearly here. I’ll have caught up to time by the end of today, I think.
The big news this week was the Kickstarter campaign for “Producing the End of the World” #1 wrapped up and we finished with funding just short of 130%! At that number, we were able to unlock one of the stretch goals we had set out too. I can’t overstate how grateful I am to everyone who backed the campaign and supported the project in every way they did. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! First published comic!
There’s some lettering work that still needs to be completed on the issue, but other than that, it’s done and it’ll be off to the printers by September. I am eager to receive my copies. I picked up all the covers. I’m especially excited for the variant cover which is inspired by my story in the anthology.
Watching …
I tore through Foundation on Apple TV+. I have a multitude of thoughts on that first season. Many intriguing concepts in play in the dramatic structure; not all of them consistently working together or succeeding, but nevertheless, I remained interested throughout the season. We’re currently working through Loot, which is rather fun. I mean, I’ll watch anything with Maya Rudolph in it. Ms. Marvel continues to be very charming. Iman Vellani and the entire cast are superb. I’m eager to go see Thor: Love and Thunder, but we’re going to wait a couple of weeks until my partner’s schedule clears up and the play she’s performing in opens. I’m going to attempt to avoid spoilers somehow. I avoided one significant spoiler in Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness and I have no idea how I managed that.
Reading …
I read all three volumes of Black Badge by Matt Kindt and Tyler Jenkins this week. (All three are available to borrow on Comixology.)
A very fun spy comic. I admire how seamless the storytelling is in this series. Nothing extraneous. Well plotted, paced and executed.
Likely turning next to a Paper Girls re-read ahead of the series debut on Amazon Prime.
Writing …
A bit of a slight break really, though I’m never completely taking time off when I have notebooks and a thumb drive with me wherever I go. More development on a bible for a graphic novel/miniseries and many wayward notes on various other creator-owned concepts and Marvel characters I want to write. Which I’ll return to this evening while I have MLS soccer muted in the background.
Before I wrap this up, I can’t leave you without dog pics …
Mabel’s recovering from a minor eye infection. She was wearing the cone of shame for few days, but she’s in good shape now and is once again free of it. She’s taken to watching me intently as I stretch before bed which, like most things she does, is adorable.
Buck recovered from the growth they removed from his butt. Also no longer in the cone of shame. We didn’t get good news on the growth which turned out to be malignant. But there’s no evidence that it’s spread elsewhere for the time being, so we’re going to monitor his health and get him checked out a little more frequently to look for signs of spreading and hope that we got all of it. He’s an old man and we know that health issues are bound to happen. But for the time being, we’re happy he’s recovered and he’s happy to be able to once again jump up on human beds.
Dipper suffers from no ailments other than a genetic predisposition toward being a jerk. But other than that, he’s good.
Wrapping this one up because by now I have been to the comics shop and I have some new things to read. I’m especially excited for the new creative team of Chip Zdarsky and Jorge Jimenez on BATMAN …
It’s been good to see you. Thanks for stopping by the ‘stack. May you find your way more adeptly through the timestream than I did this week.
See you again soon,
